Bible Study is essential to every believer

"My people perish," is a quote from Hosea 4:6 in the Bible, meaning, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." The verse refers to the destruction and spiritual decline of God's people due to a rejection of God's law and Word.  It emphasizes that a spiritual lack of knowledge and understanding of God's Word leads to negative consequences  and destruction, rather than a lack of intellectual capacity.

New Beginnings Church strongly believes the church is under attack more than ever before and Satan is testing where we stand on the Word.  We believe that the study of the Word of God is essential to every believer to stand firm on their faith.  The instruction to "write this scripture in your heart" comes from the Bible, primarily from Proverbs 3:3-4. In a biblical context, it is not a literal command but a metaphor for deeply internalizing God's Word so that is shapes our character and guides our actions and decisions.

Furthermore, to "write scripture in your heart" means to move God's teachings from simple head knowledge to a deeply held, life-shaping conviction. It involves several key concepts:

  • Complete obedience: You internalize God's commands so thoroughly that you are motivated to follow them from within, rather than seeing them as an external set of rules.
  • Deep meditation: You don't just read the words but mediate on them constantly, allowing their meaning to transform your thoughts and intentions.
  • New nature: The process of internalizing God's law is a key part of the "new covenant," where God replaces a "heart of stone" with a "heart of flesh."

Practical ways to "write" scripture on your heart

While the command is a metaphor, the Bible suggests several concrete actions to help you internalize God's Word.

  • Memorize it:  Intentionally commit verses and passages to memory. One method is to write a verse down repeatedly, erasing words until you can recite it from memory.  Or, write scriptures on post it notes where you can see them daily, read them and add new scriptures once you've committed them to memory.
  • Meditate on it:  Regularly think deeply about the meaning of scripture. Consider how it applies to your life and how it can shape your actions and character.
  • Speak it aloud: Repeatedly speak God's Word, as recommended in Deuteronomy, so that it is always on your lips.
  • Journal it: Write out scripture by hand, which can help absorb the words in a more detailed way.
  • Pray over it: Pray to God, asking for his help to understand His Word and to impress it upon your heart. Keep a journal of scriptures and read them during your morning devotionals.
